The Gaziano & Girling commitment to a product made for life

Sustainability at Gaziano & Girling

At the heart and ‘sole’ of everything

One of the very foundations in the construction of a Goodyear welted shoe, is the principle of crafting a shoe to match the longevity of it’s owner and beyond. The highest quality of materials, coupled with the highest quality of craftspeople and the appropriate after care, ensures a Gaziano & Girling shoe has a life spanning as many years as the owner wishes. Shoes built for their appropriate end-use, looked after with love and care and built by skilled artisans to last generations.

Sustainability is at the very heart and soul of a pair of Gaziano & Girling shoes. We make footwear under the premise that each pair forms a lifelong bond between us and the wearer, where careful care and attention is placed upon the methods with which to repair and renovate our shoes as and when required, supporting the sustainability of our products and preventing the need to frequently replace.

The regular review of our business practices and ways of working ensures we are open to new ideas and technology that would further enhance our approach to making footwear sustainably.

Environment

We recognise that to be truly sustainable, we must be aware of much more than just the production process for our shoes. The environments we work in, as of that of our suppliers and partners, reflect our efforts to be an ethical and responsible workplace. We endeavour to minimise waste in the manufacturing process, recycling where we can and using waste materials for training. All of our shoes are made within the same factory, therefore reducing the frequent shipping of goods or materials.

Any waste we are unable to reuse is disposed of using a responsible licensed waste management company for both the factory and our store on Savile Row. Lighting and heating at the factory have been updated at the factory to be more energy efficient and reduce the energy used. A number of our employees walk to work, ones that travel in vehicles we encourage car share.

Social Issues: Workplace

Gaziano & Girling offers equal opportunity to all employees, we train within our own factory and encourage employees to develop their skills further. We annually review remuneration and where possible promote from within. Health and safety standards and legislation are adhered to, and first aid and fire safety training is updated and conducted regularly.

Local Community

We are pleased to say we support and sponsor our local community, supplying two local football teams with kit. We also like to support charities to support our employees when we can, one being CLAPA – Cleft lip & palate association. We also support our local agriculture show with sponsorship.

Leather Sourcing policy

The majority of our material suppliers have been with us long term, all leathers used in the manufacturing process are all sourced responsibly from around the world, these tanneries have global recognition for their quality standards and comply with relevant ISO accreditation, several of our leather suppliers mark each skin with a laser marking tool to ensure traceability, these tanneries are also members of the Leather working Group, which displays a commitment to the highest environmental  and Animal welfare standards under EU law.

We use a small number of exotic skins, which are all farmed, and ensure no rare breeds are used, all exotic skins are Cites certified.
